Product management is often a murky role: poorly understood and inconsistently practiced across tech companies – confused with program and project management. Yet done well, product management is a driver of market success and effective development. This session outlined product management basics, contrasted them with project/ program management, and offered ways for all of us to work more effectively together. We took suggestions from attendees (and created an issues backlog) who wanted to:

  • Understand what product managers do, versus related PMI roles
  • Talk about agile, product/market fit, and their impact on software projects
  • Get ideas for how technical (or not) a product manager should be

Summary: Product managers and project managers attack different sides of the same problem, and need to help each other succeed.
